Here are 3 good reasons why it's not a good idea to prop your live rock up against the sides of your aquarium.
Reason #1: Placing your rock up against the glass could cause undo stress on the glass and it could possibly crack. And that, my friends, would not be good!
Reason #2: Having your live rock up against the glass could disrupt the movement of water within your tank. So it is recommended that you leave at least a 1-2" gap between the walls of your tank and your live rock. This would include along the back wall. Good flow throughout your aquarium is imperative!
Reason #3: If your rock is away from the glass then you will be able to keep the glass clean. It would be terrible to work hard at creating a beautiful aqua scape and then have it look horrible to your viewers on the outside, simply because the glass is filthy!
